What Research Is Being Done on ALS?

Gene therapy, precision medicine, and stem cell therapy are among the innovative new approaches to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis treatment.

Despite decades of research, no drug or therapy has been developed that can cure ALS. The disease remains progressive – and life threatening. Yet scientists have made great strides in their understanding of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis causes. And in laboratories all over the world, they are investigating potential new treatments that might one day transform the outlook for people living with this disease.

One of the biggest forces behind recent advances is the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” a fundraising tour de force that raised $115 million for the ALS Association. More than two-thirds of that money – $77 million – has since been funneled into research.
