10 Home Remedies for Acid Reflux - Continued
4. Blend a tablespoon of baking soda into a half a cup of water. While it doesn’t sound appetizing, baking soda neutralizes excess stomach acid that causes acid reflux. It’s recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology.
5. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. This was first printed in a publication called “Notes and Queries,” back in 1866. The original proverb is “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Bahram H. Arjmandi, PhD, RD, of the Department of Nutrition, Food, and Exercise at Florida State University, believes apples have multiple benefits. “Studies have shown that apple pectin and polyphenols improve lipid metabolism and lower the production of pro-inflammatory molecules,” he said.
6. Brew a cup of chamomile tea. The flowers of chamomile have anti-inflammatory properties.
7. Chew gum. When you chew a stick of gum, you increase saliva production. Research shows that chewing gum reduces acidic levels in your esophagus, especially if you chew it for 30 minutes following a meal.
8. Lose weight. A study showed that carrying extra weight can increase your odds of getting acid reflux. A diet low in fat an high in protein can decrease your symptoms while keeping you full and preventing overeating. Try eating smaller meals more frequently, to put less pressure on your stomach and possibly prevent the backflow of acids. Sitting upright for two or three hours after eating may help, too.
The next two home remedies for acid reflux are related to lifestyle changes, not food.
9. Quit smoking. It’s the best thing you can do for your overall health. A study found that smoking cigarettes increased the rate at which acid reflux occurred.
10. Sleep on your left side. A study in the Journal of American Medical Association’s Internal Medicine found sleeping on your left side can relieve acid reflux symptoms, while sleeping on your right side tends to aggravate heartburn, a symptom of acid reflux. You can also elevate your head with extra pillows.
If you try these home remedies for acid reflux and your acid reflux doesn’t dissipate, call your doctor.
