The good news is there is help available to make opioid withdrawal less unpleasant and even traumatic. In fact, opioid withdrawal symptoms can usually be managed medically or avoided by slowly tapering down the drug dosage — gradually decreasing the dose of medication until it's no longer used — under the guidance of your doctor.
Other medications, including buprenorphine with naloxone (Suboxone), naltrexone (Vivitrol), or methadone, are sometimes used by doctors under specific, monitored conditions to help ease symptoms of opioid withdrawal.
