The Samsung Gear 2 is a stylish smartwatch with intuitive fitness tracking. Learn more about its functionality and ideal pairing device.

Overview

The Samsung Gear 2 is a fashionable and functional smartwatch. With multiple options for both the strap and watch face, you can match it to any style. There are a variety of apps available, including ones to keep track of all your fitness goals, and notifications allow you to track updates from your phone. However, you will want to limit the number of apps you use on it, as the display can get crowded quickly.

The Gear 2 is easy to navigate either by touching the screen or rotating the bezel to select an app. There are also two buttons on the bezel, one for BACK and one for HOME. The HOME button can be programmed so that pressing it twice initiates a specific action, such as opening a designated application. You also have the option to use voice commands, though its voice recognition software is occasionally lackluster.

The Gear 2 works with your phone, displaying the messages or updates that you select, and can continue to function even if you don’t have your phone with you. It does not have speakers, though it can be used with bluetooth headphones if you want to listen to music or make calls.

Design

The Samsung Gear 2 is a smartwatch that offers plenty of style. You can choose from a number of colors, materials, and faces. The basic, and least expensive, model features a slim, low-profile silicone band in either black or white, along with a stainless steel watch face covered in scratch-resistant glass. You also have the option to choose a leather band in either white or black, as well as watch faces made of either rose gold or platinum, though these options are more than twice as expensive as the basic model.

The circular touch screen can be personalized with optional watch faces. Choose between a simple, modern analog display with no numbers; an analog display that includes the time, day, month, and goal tracker; or a digital display with the time and date. The watch always displays the time in ambient mode, then changes to a full display when you bring your wrist up. The display is sharp, vibrant, and easy to read.
