What Research Is Being Done on ALS? - Page 5
Personalized medicine for ALS
Money raised from the Ice Bucket Challenge has also gone to fund personalized, or precision, medicine efforts. Precision medicine moves away from the old one-size-fits-all model of treatment, into a more customized approach that tailors therapy to an individual’s genes, lifestyle, and environment.
To develop such a custom-fit treatment requires an understanding of how genes contribute to the development of ALS. To that end, the ALS Association and Columbia University Medical Center have launched the Genomic Translation for ALS Clinical Care (GTAC) project. Researchers plan to sequence genes from 1,500 people with ALS, and use what they learn to develop more targeted treatments.
