What type of gastroesophageal reflux disease medication should you take?

Many of the treatments for GERD are the same as for getting rid of acid reflux; losing weight, quitting smoking, elevating your head in bed, and not lying down after you eat can help. Your physician can also recommend that you take either over-the-counter or prescription antacids, H2 blockers, or PPIs.

If these medications don’t work, your doctor may suggest surgery. The surgery is called Nissen fundoplication and is named after Rudolf Nissen, the physician who created this procedure in the 1950s. The surgery is done by wrapping a portion of your stomach around your esophagus to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter.

With proper treatment, gastroesophageal reflux disease can be controlled.
