Is lower left back pain a sign of kidney infection?

If lower left back pain is caused by pyelonephritis, it will be accompanied by other symptoms of a urinary tract infection.

Pain in this location can also be due to diverticulitis, a disease of the digestive tract. Pain caused by diverticulitis is normally worse while eating or shortly afterwards and is accompanied by constipation, diarrhea, and bloating.

Like lower right back pain, pain in the lower left back can be a sign of kidney stones, bladder cancer, or kidney cancer. In these cases, you will experience urinary or bowel changes.

Pain in any part of your back can also be caused by arthritis, a slipped disc, or other injury. Your doctor will be able to diagnose what is causing your lower left back pain.
