Two thirds of women and many men will have a yeast infection. Learn to recognize the symptoms of yeast infection and understand its causes.

A yeast infection is an infection by the fungus Candida. Another name for a yeast infection is thrush.

Yeast infections most commonly affect the tissue in the vagina and vulva, but some yeast infections are found in the mouth. These are called an oral yeast infection. Men can also have yeast infections in their genitals or other areas of the body.

What causes yeast infections?

Normally, the bacteria and yeast inside your body keep each other in check, preventing inflammation and infection. The bacteria Lactobacillus in particular helps limit the growth of yeast in the body.

When the balance between yeast and bacteria is thrown off, however, yeast can grow and spread too rapidly, causing an infection.
