Yeast infection treatment

Yeast infections are treated with antifungal medications, including topical creams, oral pills, or pills that are inserted into the vagina. If you live in the United States, you will need to see a doctor for a prescription to treat your yeast infection.

Some research indicates that unsweetened yogurt can also help yeast infections, as the bacteria in yogurt help fight the Candida overgrowth. However, to be certain that it is a yeast infection causing your symptoms, rather than another infection, you should always consult a doctor before attempting any home remedies for yeast infections.

Your doctor may advise you to take certain precautions while your yeast infection is healing, such as:

  • Avoiding sexual activity
  • Washing with water, rather than with soap or shower gel
  • Fully drying the affected area after washing
  • Wearing cotton underwear
  • Taking showers instead of baths
  • Finishing your full course of medication

Yeast infection while pregnant

A vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy cannot harm your baby. However, it does require special treatment. Your doctor may need to prescribe a particular antifungal medication, and pregnant women often need to undergo a longer course of treatment to make sure the yeast infection clears up completely.

If you are pregnant and experience symptoms of yeast infection, talk to your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
